The psychedelic properties are believed to result from the correlation between the 4-HO-EPT and the 5-HT2A receptors. However, the role and results of these interactions remain elusive and will require further scientific investigation. 4-HO-EPT contains a chain linked to the terminal amine RN of its tryptamine backbone (EPT).
